Sink or Swim Philadelphia were awarded an $1000 grant at Stake #4, November 13, 2011.

1. Describe the project a STAKE Grant would you accomplish:
A STAKE grant would help Sink or Swim Philadelphia create and implement a website as well as print outreach material. Sink or Swim (SOS)’s mission is to assist those people in the Philadelphia area who are uninsured or underinsured pay for necessary medical expenses by donation made by web-donors. Currently SOS Philly is using Facebook as the web platform for donor and recipient information, which limits recipients and donor networks. A website would allow SOS to help more recipients each month and increase organization awareness and SOS donor base.

2. How will you use the grant toward the realization of your project? $750 is your imaginary budget:
The grant would allow SOS Philly to hire a web-designer to create and implement a website. SOS Philly has reached out to numerous web-designers, but with little to no budget, we have had little success procuring a web-designer. It will also allow SOS to print recipient and donor outreach material.

3. A little about yourself and what led you to your current creative goals. This may include a previous project of yours, ways it both succeeded and failed:
I began conceptualizing SOS over three and a half years ago. At that time I knew many people who's family or friends were struggling with massive medical debt due to catastrophic illnesses. These citizens had to decide literally between paying their medical bills or paying for food or rent and it broke my heart every time I heard these stories. It was around that time that the economy began to collapse, a variety of new health care plans were being discussed and it all seemed more dismal than ever. I needed to do something to help, thus SOS was born.

4. Why is this project important? How will it benefit the community?:
I am a firm believer that if you have it, share it! Whether it is time, money, food or a roof for a wayward friend or animal - if I am plentiful in such things, why should others not be as well! It saddens me that my neighbors not only have to struggle with medical illness, but have to worry about paying for overwhelming medical expenses as well.
This will benefit the community by giving these neighbors one month where they do not have to decide between paying for life necessities like food or rent, or paying for medical expenses.
